Book examines the role that the fighter pilots of the 8th and 9th Air Forces played in the European Theatre. It recounts some of the stories that accompany the raid on Dieppe the D-Day landings, the Ardennes offensive and numerous other operations. By war‘s end the dominance of the allied air forces was such that hundreds of American pilots were recorded as aces, each with a tally of five or more enemy aircraft destroyed. Supported by over 150 historic photographs, the book recounts the build-up of the various squadrons, their deployment and operations in the period leading to the final defeat of Nazi Germany. Alongside the informative text there are detailed appendices listing the top 100 American aces, and all the participating fighter units and squadron-identifying code letters.
