A race created to promote the use and development of seaplanes. The race attracted teams from France, Italy, Switzerland, Britain and the U.S. The history of the race (1913-1931) was marked by the evolution of seaplane design and by the vagaries of the organization of the event. Victory brought honor and the chance to host the next event. Three consecutive victories secured the trophy for the winning team for posterity. Race also promoted development of reliable high-powered engines and advanced airframe design.
