In 1863, then Lieutenant-Commander Edward Barrett was the Instructor of Gunnery at the New York Navy Yard, teaching volunteer officers basic gunnery practices.
In an effort to push through their training as fast as possible, he wrote and published this instruction manual at his own expense. Naval Howitzer is reproduced here in its entirety for the first time, with a new Introduction by Steven Bogdan adding newly researched background information and biographies not available in the original, and never before assembled on the key personalities involved (Read about two important lessons George Washington learned shortly after his first combat victory).
Also included is a Foreword by Roger W. Price, Artillery Coordinator for the American Civil War Society.
