This book is a remarkable account chronicling the preparatory events in Florida before and during World War II. Florida had 6 military bases in 1941, but had 227 by 1944, with most related to serving the training and testing needs of the air branches of the military. Over one million servicemen came to Florida. The book describes the beginnings of all the giant bases (Blanding, Eglin, Pensacola, MacDill and others) with details of many smaller, but nonetheless important, bases. |

The sheer scope of the development in Florida of airfields for the Army, Navy, Coast Guard and Air Force, and providing training facilities for pilots and aircraft testing and support, underscores the national resolve to be prepared. This is the account of those years, detailing specific bases, men & women and activities. Florida: The War Years book includes, as well, details of the Civil Air Patrol, wartime industry, the role of blimps, POW camps, U-boat attacks, the beach patrol and other topics. Most photos are archival, and in some instances had to be professionally re-photographed for inclusion in the book. |
