In January 1909, the Committee of Imperial Defence produced a report on the possible military use of aircraft. This led to the creation in May 1912 of the Royal Flying Corps, who by the end of the year had one squadron of airships and three of aeroplanes. Their military prowess was tested two years later when the First World War saw forty-one aircraft taken to France. Initially, they carried out scouting and observation duties but as the war continued the RFC increased in size and its aircraft were used more and more in an offensive role.
